Chlorine & Chemical Removal

Chlorine is a yellow gas which is added to water for disinfection in municipal water systems. It also can be added in other forms such as bleach. When chlorine is used in municipal water treatment, it and some of its compounds can cause problems as follows:

Free Chlorine:
Chlorine which has not combined with any substances in the water and is detected as a taste & odour. As little as 0.2ppm chlorine can produce bad tastes and odours with concerns to drinking water and cooking.

Chlorinated Organic Compounds:
Free chlorine combines with various organic compounds found in municipal water to produce complexes which taste bad or are toxic or carcinogenic. Most are the result of industrial waste pollution, although some may be of natural origin. The trihalomethanes (THM) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) are probably familiar terms to most people. These compounds are often formed in municipal treatment plants as the water is chlorinated following treatment.

Chloramines (Combined Chlorine):
Free chlorine combines with ammonia to form chloramines. Ammonia is sometimes introduced along with chlorine in city water plants to stabilize the chlorine. Ammonia can also enter water as a contaminant from industrial wastes.

Other chemicals that can be found in municipal water include, Vinyl Chloride, TCE, PCE, Benzene, Ammonia, Herbicides, Pesticides, Inks, Dyes and many others.
